Saint Plain

it’s the 2nd time this week
that you’ve been accused of
being awfully quiet
by a bartender

you suppose the typical
tends to be garrulous
or familiar enough to
wage conversation
so easily

the local regs begin to arrive
& she pours their drinks
w/out asking what they want
& she hasn’t stopped talking since–
“Donna” “Joe” “Linda” “Gene”
“She said” “He did” “Last night”

she says “I’m Saint Plain today”
and you’re not sure what she meant
or if it’s really what she said
but you like the sound of it

you like the way she makes
an apparently dull life
sound so eventful
