A Courtship in Cuts

Guy came in with
an overgrown crewcut,
wanting something
he could comb
to one side.

“Meet a girl?” I asked.

“Got me.”

He had a cut before
popping the question.
I watched his lips rehearse.

Next time I saw him
he had a ring.

“Set a date?”

“Week before Christmas.”

Last time I saw him,
the ring was gone.

I didn’t ask,
and he didn't say,
but I swear he
grayed ten years
in three months.
