yesterday it was bleeding gums,
last week a fractured foot
today an ingrown fingernail
the finger is swollen and throbbing,

“I can’t describe how much...”
“If you’re going to bitch about your finger, I don’t want to hear it. 
When I tried to tell you about that pain in my side, you told me to stop whining. 
So I don’t care about your finger.”

she was right
and once again
I found myself in a similar situation;
being wrong

I closed my eyes
and focused in on the throbbing
it was steady, like a heartbeat
and if I had anyone who remotely cared
or willing to listen to my gripes;

I’d mention how incredibly painful
one little finger could be
